Hey!  My name is Sandie McCarthy-Roberts, and I'm happily married to the Love of my life... Gary Roberts.  We have one amazingly beautiful 17 year old son, Dana Joseph Maximillian!  Dana works part time as a television news reporter, and is quite good. He's off to University next year.  Gary and I?  We own and operate an Advertising / Marketing Agency.  We've been doing this for a number of years.  We hang our hats here in Southwestern Ontario, Canada.  The best part of owning my own business?  When I need time off to do something else?  My boss... me... is very generous.  :)  I've been scrapbooking all my life.  Properly?  For about 12 or 13 years.  I love scrapbooking.  I love creating pages, and altered articles, cards, organizing projects and mixed media art... whatever.  I never tried anything in mixed media before coming to Bad Girls... and I've been SO inspired since being there, that it's opened my creative side up completely!  It's all just been so much fun!  Besides all of this, I'm also a writer.  I love to create in any capacity.  We have some gorgeous animals in our home...  Two sweet cats full of attitude, called Disney and Jaguar... And lastly?  I am owned by the delicious problematic puggle of perpetual need, named Beauregard.

When I was younger a friend of mine once told me that she only dreamed in black and white...I was horrified! :) The best part of dreaming for me is the intensity of it, the emotions, the realism and the color!  The more of those qualities my dream has the more likely I am to remember it upon waking.  I am very happy to report that I dream in full technicolor!

How too:

I painted the canvas and added some gauze to the paint and Gel medium while still wet. I painted the Chipboard shapes. I bundled the fibers and tied them together at one end with wire. Then I hot glued the fibers between the two chipboard shapes. I bundled a heap more fibers and hot glued them to the back of the metal face ( burning my fingers in the process) then I glued the head to the body, and adhered it to the mini canvas. I positioned the beads on to represent her earing's and to cover the holes in her face. The chipboard letters were placed on last. The canvas is stuck to the easel, so it is one piece and help to counteract the weight, so it doesn't constantly fall off the easel.

"The hardest part of this piece was making sure she stayed together and that's where the pins came in. I glued her up all around the edges because the sticky part of the canvas wasn't enough to hold it all with the batting. Once glued I pinned her up like a pattern would be and let it dry for quite some time. This piece was constantly needing to be reinforced (PATIENCE)!! "

Persephone’s Return

This is my interpretation of Persephone’s return from the Underworld, which, according to Greek mythology, brings the start of spring. To read about the Greek mythology regarding Persephone, check out this  link.

I painted a paper mache torso for the base of this project, and created a dress out of lace and covered with flowers, pearl stickers, and fiber “vines”. To create a platform for the figure, I covered a box with green mulberry paper and fibers. I also added a cardboard roll covered with fabric for the figure to sit on, to give more height. The back of the dress is made with a doily that is sprayed with glimmer mist, and another piece of mulberry paper.

I did a bit of reading on Medusa in order to brush up on my mythology . I was always fascinated by her in my school days and was interested to find that her story left me feeling very sad.

We always see her depicted as a monster, lolling tongue, turning anyone who dares look at her into stone. In fact it is said that she was the most beautiful of three gorgon sisters, the only one with mortal attributes. She was known for her great beauty, especially her gorgeous hair, until Athena turned it into a head full of snakes.

This doll is meant to show Medusa in a private moment, alone, broken and mourning her brutally lost virginity and beauty. Gorgons are said to be from the sea so I tried to keep her in her element. Thanks for the great challenge!

Bio.  My name is Monica Downing...aka Madzie. I am 45 years young, married with 2 kids and our puppy Leo. I relocated my family from California to Virginia 5 years ago. I work full time in commercial lending and in my spare time I do everything I can to create and learn more about art and step further outside of my box.

I have been scrapbooking for about 3 years but just recently got introduced to mixed media. Project 52 has had a profound impact on my art.  Since becoming a "Bad Girl" I have learned so much and tried so many things I would otherwise  had no idea how to approach. I am so flattered to have been chosen by this elite group of artists to be a guest designer this month.

I have always dreamed of going to Paris and seeing the Eiffel Tower, so I chose it as my piece of architecture for this project. I wanted to create a romantic looking piece of Art Money because I think Paris must be the most romantic place to go and also because it is so close to Valentines Day.

 

Supplies:

Tips For Creating This At Home:

•  I cut a piece of heavy card stock to the required size. Sponge brushed modge podge onto the card stock and placed a piece of muslin on top of that. When it dried I trimmed the muslin with pinking sheers.
• I taped the sticky sides of the masking tape together to make a piece of paper. I then watered down my Gesso a little and applied it to the masking tape paper.
• I printed out the picture of the Eiffel Tower onto the masking tape paper.
• I made one layer of the lace border from the unused part of the of the Eiffel Tower print and a border punch.
• The other lace border was made using another piece of masking tape paper painted with Gesso, and a different border punch.
• I layered torn strips from an antique book page for the right border
• I cut 3 different sized heart shapes from fabric and muslin, and also a rose cluster, that were used in the corners. The Paris button was cut from a piece of patterned paper.
• I printed the serial number, country and year, my name and the www.artmoney.org address onto muslin.
• Once I had created all of the elements needed, I started layering until I achieved the look I wanted.

Tips to Create This At Home:

• To create this .. I paint card with a white paint,
• while it was still wet I squirted color wash colors close to the wet paint,
• as I dried it with the heat gun, if it looked to dark I squirted it with water, making the background.
• Then I added the texture paste through some star sequin waste.
• Then I stamped the images with stazon ink
• I then colored some parts of the stamps with white paint,
• and then added some glitter gelly pen.
• To finish it off I used masking tape colored with distress inks,
• and then some German scrap, and stamped the title.

Tips for recreating this at home;

Find an interesting background from a magazine/catalog. try to look for ones that are out of focus; I collaged over the original, focused subject matter to create my own artwork. The quote is also from an anthropologie catalog -- I just wrote it out by hand.
Use photographs that you have had laying around for a while / not sure what to do with -- you may be surprised at how much they inspire you!
Repeating elements (in my case, the kraft paper hearts, masking tape, lions, and neutral color scheme) add a cohesiveness to your collage, especially helpful if it is composed of various bits and pieces.

"I had so much fun creating this. I wanted to create a pretty piece of money note, hoping that all money notes are pretty, so that we all don't have to spend them away too fast .teehee."

Materials;
~Webster's Pages Pattern Paper
~Theresa Collins Pattern Paper
~Duct Tape, Packing Tape and Masking Tape
~Coins
~Tattered Angel Glimmer Mist
~Making Memories Paints
~Tape - unknown

Instructions;
Use Webster's Pages Pattern paper as the base. measuring 11 x 18 cm.
Place the plastic card (unknown source) on the centre of the paper.
Place the duct tape, masking and packing tape onto the card. (I have peeled off a piece of the packing tape from a parcel I have received, tore off part of the barcode to be used too)
Place a strip of Theresa Collins Pattern paper .measuring 2.5cm x 11cm.
Layer with some more small papers from theresa Collins.
Cut out the number "4" for the left top hand.
Place coins around the right bottom corner and a significant piece on the left.

Paint with MM Paint.
Place strips of the transparent tape with "house" prints.
Add a butterfly below the number '4'.
Mist with Arctic Blue color.

Digital:
Use picasa to do color saturation.
Use color shade "sky blue" to distress the note.

Tips to make this at home;
Yransfer the image on the fabric, you can do this with the golden medium gel
add some tape, first I crunched it with my hands, add some alcohol ink on the tape...make stichings with your sewing machine
add some crackle paint..when all is dried, you can make more stitchings...and last but not least, add some gesso, not to much....you can add the gesso with a dry pencil....

the back of your Money should look similar to this

I used packing tape to transfer images of buildings I photographed in China a couple of years ago. I like this transfer method for this project because it keeps the images

thin and flat. I then modge podged the 'hornet nest' material I picked up after a storm last year. I figure this way I have 2 of the oldest types of architecture covered.

My attempt at Chinese writing symbol represents 'endurance'.

~Copic Markers

~150 lb. metallic paper

 

TIP: Hornets nest is very fragile, work carefully and dry fit, once its down you will   not be able to move it.

LARISSA ALBERNAZ!!!!!!!!!!!!

I wanted to shake up things here on the blog as we always have our Guest Designers at the end of the month. Larissa has been part of the Bad Girls Community since June 2008, and you can view her gallery here including this amazing 3-D cake, and this 3-D carousel. I always thought Larissa was very kind, and when I got to meet her in July, my intuition was confirmed that she is truly a beautiful soul. It was a highlight of my summer to get to spend some time scrapping together.

Larissa's Bio: My name is Larissa Albernaz. I´m 38 years old. I live in Brazil, in a city called Sao Jose dos Campos, state of Sao Paulo. I´m married and I have a 6 year old daughter, Isabela (a.k.a Bebel).

I have been scrapbooking for almost five years and I´m totally addicted which means I see artistic possibilities over everything around me. Every day, I enjoy perceiving the colors in my surroundings and I pay close attention to my inner emotions, even if it’s to throw them out only on a layout. 

Along the years, scrapbook has provided me a great sort of artistic possibilities. In fact, I can still learn some new techniques everyday and it provides me to express myself in style, mixing paper, embellishments, colors, memories and a message. So, scrapbooking to me is not only a way to preserve my memories but, it's the way I do Art.

Tips for Creating This at Home: For me the theme “Botanicals” harks back to the enchanted forest as the same does to the fairy tales. So, for this challenge, I decided to trace the path to fantasy and for that matter, I painted a wooden book like shaped box. 

• For the cover of the book-box, I used papers and flowers collage,
  
• making the most of the stem wires to obtain some volume and the idea of a tangle of branches.
  
• I added a “wooden fairy door” I bought at on etsy, and added glitter layers.
  
• For the inside, I proceeded with the paper collage
  
• and added my message, flowers, wires and a fairy.

Tips For Creating This At Home:

I knew right away I wanted to use Garden Wire for this project. It is relatively inexpensive at a large box craft store. While I was there, I saw Martha Stewart's Crepe Paper Roses Kit, so I decided that would be my botanical part. The larger flowers are made from coffee filters. In addition, I used images of Georgia O'Keefe floral paintings to support the botanical part. The wood is the old shutter, I bought several at a garage sale years ago, $1 each. The birdhouse is not part of my project, I just thought I looked nice as it was on my window sill. :)

• Clip floral image to shutter with clothespin
• Adhere collage image to shutter (scallop border)
  
• Wrap wire around shutter, tie in several spots around shutter slats to hold wire with shabby laces and ribbons
• Make crepe paper roses and coffee filter flowers (instructions to be posted in the Bad Girls forums by Wednesday). Clip to wire with clothespin
  
• Add additional embellishment clusters with clothespin for finishing touches

Tips for Creating This At Home:

I started off with a large stick of balsa Wood, and cut the blocks using a steak knife, then I sanded them to make them nice and smooth. Then I gave the blocks and chipboard pieces a coat of paint. Once it was dry I used a thin paint brush to wind the wire around to make the springs, then I added the chippie shapes and used the glue and beads to stick the shapes into the blocks. Once it was all together I covered the pieces in Dimensional Magic and added some Stickles. I added magnets to the back of three of the pieces so it sticks to the fridge, I originally wanted to have them free standing but the balsa wood is just not heavy enough and it falls over all the time.

For the back piece, cover the wood tray with patterned tissue paper. Use book pages inked with various shades of green to create "hills". Wrap wire around a paintbrush handle to make spirals, then wrap around strips of ric rack, and top with paper flowers. For the gate, paint white and add gold embossing. Create grass by cutting green tissue paper. Use wire to make water pouring from the watering can. The hinge
was created by using brads to attach rick rack to both pieces.

Tips for Making This At Home: Seeing all the leftover Christmas decorations at Michael's got me started on this project. I think I paid 11 cents each for the silver leaves and fillers on the tree. This piece has lots of depth because of it.

• First off I knew I wanted to use some of my tree images I took a few years back to help the background pop.
• I painted the 12 x 12 piece of wood with gesso to get rid of the brown of the wood and so it would have more tooth.
• When that was dried I did an image transfer using Golden't gel matte medium with my images. Gel transfers are super easy you just have to have patience for them. Spread a layer on where you want to place the images you're transferring in my instance the trees. Place them face down onto the gel medium and let it sit overnight, make sure it's smooth and even.
• The next day you will take your spray bottle and completely drench the paper (images) and start peeling up the layers of paper and you'll have the image left on the board!
• I didn't have the entire bottom of the trees so I had to draw and colors those in to blend so it looked real. I used my general's pencil as well as the caran d'ache neocolor crayon.
• Once the board was dry I painted on a thin glaze of Payne's grey acrylic blended with the golden glazing solution. This is better then diluting it with water, gives it a more consistant layer. Payne's grey always reminds me of winter, it's bluish gray and perfect for this piece.
• Once that had dried I gave the board some texture or snow as I call it. I created the main tree base with the light molding paste, I spread it on with an old burnisher to make it uneven and have ridges. I also added some to the bottom of the board for snow piles. Let this dry, if it's thin it will dry fast if it's super thick let it dry overnight.
• Once dry I started ripping apart the Christmas ornaments, they are all on their own wires so I could bend them and place them where I wanted. I started layering them using the clear glue. Let that dry flat and overnight.
• Next take the bridal garland and start snipping off the pieces you like and place where you like on the tree or below with glue. Let that dry.
• Add some glue to the areas you want to glimmer with glass and sprinkle on the glass flakes. Let that all dry.
• Next comes the embellishing, I used and opaque white pen to draw swirls all over, I added the snowflake pendant/charm to the tree so it dangled, I added the Jolee flat snowflakes placed with glue.
• Next I took the green distress ink and went around the edges of the quote.
• Lastly I placed the bird. Both the bird and quote were glued with the gel medium and glazed over with it.
• Once that was dry I traced around it with the sketch n wash pencil.
• Voila you have a gorgeous winter scene! Super easy!!

Tips for Making This At Home:

• I used a 14” x 14” pine wood board. 
• Over top I lathered on a medium thick coat of molding paste, and immediately drew with a stylus the alphabet all over the board. 
• Once dry, I painted it with Golden fluid paints, Hansa Yellow, and then Gold Green over that.  Let dry.
• Then I cut out small circles, sewed them together to cinch them into flowers. 
• Added flower centres and hot glued to the canvas board. 
• The stems are old book pages glued and lightly gessoed.
• The wire flower was made just twisting it into the shape I wanted.  And this stem is half a branch. 
• All hot glued on to the board.
