JULIE ANN:
I
made a paper mache art doll for my
self-portrait. I thought for days on this challenge before I
started this project, and even did an art journal page on it. I
even started making a torso of my own body
like a belly cast yet I just wasn't feeling it, and
then Tania showed us her magnificient fairie
torso below, and I took it as a sign
that I ought to abandon my torso for now
for the creative challenge of seeing what I could brainstorm up
instead. And I love the new result.
Title "Artsy Scrappy Mama"
I decided my self-portrait would be a paper mache art doll because I didn't want to buy something, although I did look in a few stores. I wanted to actually make something and get my hands dirty, yet actually I wore "kitchen gloves" for the messy part! The wire mesh for the dress is no accident, I want you to see through it, to see the body has vintage sewing pattern tissue paper on it. I also wanted to attach items to the dress so this wire worked great, it is called "WireForm by Paragon" or "WireMesh by Paragon" depending on whether you want copper, brass, or aluminum diamond. Pam asked me what her name is, and I decided to name her "Artsy Scrappy Mama" because I wanted to show you a self-portrait of me in my studio, which is painted yellow, where I am happy and thriving.
My technique: I wanted to use things that were on hand for paper mache. Make note of everything I recycled!
- The doll body was constructed from a toilet paper roll for the torso,
- and a wad of newspaper rolled into a ball for the head,
- taped together with masking tape.
- I used straws for the arms and legs,
- I punched a hole into the body for the legs and arms with my Crop-a-Dile
- Instead of using newspaper for paper mache, I used vintage music paper, vintage sewing patterns, and vintage book pages
- I made a 1-part flour to 1-part water mixture for the paper mache glue, and let each layer dry overnight
- The eyes and mouth were made on Claudine Hellmuth’s Sticky Back Canvas, cut out and applied
- The background behind her is also paper mache, made on a cardboard mailer. The newspaper article is about me, written several years ago, an interview I gave on hybrid scrapbooking when I was Creative Editor of Scrapbook Dimensions Magazine
Tools used: Martha Stewart Butterfly Punch; GlimmerMist by Tattered Angels Mist and Screens; Punchella; Acrylic Paints; Stickles glitter glue; Copic marker; oil pastels; water, flour, gloves Please see the forum for further tutorials on my paper mache art doll!
FRANCESCA:
Fearless - my mother
Faith - my mother-in-law
Compassion - my sister
Strength - Elisa
Loyalty - myself
In each box I will store a keepsake that have been given to me by these women to remind me of them and to pass on to Elisa.
Hint at recreating this project:
- Gesso the entire box, inside and out and let dry completely.
- Then paint the entire box with Iridescent Pearl (Fine), and
- when fully dry, give it a good sanding to distress.
- Use your favourite patterned papers and cut lots of circles in varying sizes
- and layer, layer, layer using pop dots.
- Further embellish the flower centres with pearls, buttons, or rhinestones.
- Use a bird template (if you google bird template you’ll find a ton to choose from).
- The pearlized buttons were further enhance by colouring them in with Copic markers, to add a splash of colour.
Found Objects: Bottle caps; Wire; Pearlized buttons
AIMEE:
I had to keep this project simple because I was on vacation and didn't have a lot of time to complete it. I wanted a piece that had little elements about me inside so it's really like a treasure box.
I started out by gessoing the paper mache blank inside and out and then rubbed on various colors of distress ink. I picked a photo of me and framed it in fall ribbon. I knew I wanted to do a Fall theme because I LOVE Fall and I was born in the fall. Once I had the theme it just pulled itself together. I cut off the back of a vintage book cover and glued it on the base. I also distressed and gessoed that a bit as well. I then glued on my photo, canvas stickers, leaves, door plate and buttons. Let the glue dry overnight to make sure everything is secure. I then traced the elements with my sketch and wash pencil to bring them out a bit more. Next I glued the smaller paper mache box inside in the center. I stamped a leaf stamp with Brown Stayz On Ink. I cut out a place in the top of the box to embed the green leaf pendant and secured that with glue and gold paper on the back of that. I distressed the smaller box as well. Then found my elements that meant a lot to me, created tags and attached them with white string. I chose items that were all about me, part of me and that meant a lot to me. Last but not least I glued on the skeleton leaves around the edge, glued on the pearls, glued on the large ribbon and attached an old amber pendant that was my Nana's to the bottom of the ribbon with copper wire and voila that is my treasure box!

KATIE J.:
For the project Who I Am,
I altered a paper mache book
to make an art journal of the different
aspects of me.
For the project Who I Am, the outside of the book was created by using a crackle medium. To add some color, I took some tissue paper and sprayed it with glimmer mist. After it dried, it was crumbled, and adhered with gel medium. A fun element was the use of Christmas picks that are used in holiday arrangements. They are inexpensive and have great color and lots of glitter. The angel on the cover is also a Christmas ornament. I included the “sweet pea” packet, as that is my “birth flower”, and is my mom’s nickname for me. Inside, the book contains sheets of paper that I’ve used as the art journal. I used paint to create the backgrounds, and machine stitching to attach collage elements. For the tags, I used distress inks for the backgrounds, as well as a mask for the decorative edge. I used a resist technique on the tags: first, I wrote words with white oil pastel then I sprayed over it with ink. Next, covering the tags with a scrap paper, I used an iron to melt the wax, leaving the words visible. The pages are tied together with tulle and topped with another Christmas pick, some flowers, and a stick pin to unify the inside with the outside. This was a fun project that allowed me to play with many techniques.

Inside the Shadow Box, for which there is a tutorial on the forum, I placed a tree the number 4 and a cupie baby to represent the 4 children I have grown. The flattened bottle top I found whilst out shopping is added under the heart and tied on with threads. I added mulberry paper flowers and ribbons to finish my mini me.

Wow. Ok . The one word that describes me is Mother. It defines me above everything else. It supercedes everything else. And it brings me the most joy above everything else. So if I can only pick one word... it has to be that one.

One word...FIGHTER...I say this because I have had to fight to make it through a lot in my life...
Cancer at 30...a bad divorce...19 years of an undiagnosed medical condition, and because I would fight anything fiercely for the people in my life that I love.
