I am so excited now that we have three challenges under our belts, don't you? I have to give a shout out to those of you who have done all three challenges so far! You know who you are! I might even make a special blinkie for you ladies.
We have something yummy for everyone today!!!! EXTRA EXTRA Read all about it!!! Our designers have gathered together their secret tips and/or opened up their secret sacred studios to share with you, our loyal followers and fans! Just follow and hop along our blog festival below to be treated as only the Bad Girls can! Yay!!!
The mission for Bad Girls Project 52 is for you to achieve peace and joy as an artist as you discover hidden talents. Skellie blogged that "Your hidden talents are the things you could do that would make you happy. But you don’t know it yet." So how do you apply that to the Bad Girls challenges?
- Tip #1To discover your hidden talents & passions in mixed media art, take our Blog Hop today - Take notes! Lots of great tips!!!
- Tip #2 To discover your hidden talents & passions in mixed media art, start googling. Everytime we have a new challenge, I google that challenge keyword plus the word "tutorials" (example: "mixed media canvas tutorial"). In the old days, I used to go to the library, and check out 10 books on the subject - that's how I'd find my passion. The google way is so much easier! If you can't find a tutorial, ask us to teach it - we have several Project 52 Team Members getting ready to teach classes at Bad Girls!
- Tip #3 To discover your hidden talents & passions in mixed media art, open a flickr account, then search for keywords relating to our challenge. You can also search for groups relating to our challenge (example: click on groups, then search "mixed media" or another keyword, and sort by Relevant and by Activity or Size to find whole groups of people who love to make the same thing you do! When you see something you like, "favorite" it. If you favorite the artist, click on their profile and add them as a "contact", and see if they have their blog or etsy store listed. As Tim Gunn once said, "Be inspired, make it better, and make it work." Or something like that. LOLHere is a mosaic of my recent favorites on Flickr, it's interesting to see how the same colors and similar styles appear: 1. Sweet Pink Snowflakes, 2. "DANCE OF THE SNOWFLAKES" ~ wall art, 3. *QueeN of HeaRTs* aLTeReD aRt ViNTaGe PaPeR DoLL CoLLaGe MoBiLe, 4. *eNCHaNTMeNt* FaiRy MeRMaiD aLTeReD aRt PaPeR DoLL TiN CoLLaGe, 5. Lesson 3, 6. Tips for re-creating this at home:
- Try to use any items you can find at home. Recycle them and go green.
- Cover up the rectangle metal box with patterned paper. Trace a semi circle to make the little roof.
- Use a fold (distress with midnite blue staz on) and a cinnamon stick to place at the top of the box, embellish with pretty details.
- To make items look old, try paint and distressing. cut a little hole to make a window. Place the dolls, one resting at the window and one outside the house and one standing at the bird cage.
The fun part is embellishing this project with blings, butterflies and flowers. Let your creativity flows and have fun !!
Anna aka Finn's Paper Doll
My inspiration for paper dolls was a eye-catching video by polish group
"Armia" called "The hidden love" - lovely song, one of my favouries in
fact. I loved the climate, the animated elements and the cartoon singer
- and decided to create something similar in concept.
- a bit of cardboard
- a set of patterned and plain papers - my colour choice was green and greenish and a hint of blue
- bingo card (Tattered Angels) and a sheet from an old book
- Glimmer Mists by Tattered Angels: Hydrangea, and Honey Dew
- a piece of transparent ribbon
- 2 acrylic squares (Tim Holtz's Fragments) and 2 photos
- crown and hand stamps
- a piece of string
- found metal objects: gears and other clock's parts
- self-adhesive scrabble letters
- Distress ink: Walnut Stain by Ranger
- rub-on - Daisy D's
- brown gel-pen
My dolls are my husband and I of course - all made with paper, cardboard, metal elements from my collection and decorated with stamped crowns (well - why not?!) pointing hands and red hearts which I cut out from a different, red paper. Our photos are covered with two pieces of acrylic. 2-D dolls needed some scenery - so I made a shadowbox paper picture: a canvas back, decorated with paper hills, clouds and trees, embelished a bit with metal gears, scrabble letters and numbers from a bingo card. I coloured it with Glimmer Mists, sliced together and let it dry. The last step of the creation was placing the dolls in front of the landscape, on the "wooden frame" of the canvas, altered with paper, ribbons, rub-ons and other objects which I used in the landscape. If you want to try a similar project at home (and I hope you will!!!) try to imagine the whole composition before starting the project - a sketch may be a good idea. It will help you avoid many mistakes as placing the embellies in the places which will be covered by dolls or other parts of the creation. And remember - have fun!!!
Wendela's Paper Doll
My theme is JOY!!! I made a wedding dress...
Julie Ann says, "Of course, what day is one of the happiest days of your life than your wedding day?" !!!
embossing folder, with birds and swirls (cuttle bug)
bigshot
alcohol ink raisin and pearl (ranger)
glimmermist pearl (tattered angels)
lace
webster's pages winterwings paper
vintage brooche
some flowers, I used on tiny bouquet, find on a fleamarket
I used a paper roll inside , to make it more firm
My theme is JOY!!
Required material – Metal is here aluminium foil, and an old vintage brooche
I love to make dresses!! And this is a real challenge for me to make one from paper!!! Clothes for my doll!! A real party dress, maybe for a little bride...I began with the paper, made it wet and crunched with my hands, to create the back of the dress..with the aluminium foil, I made the front of the dress. And of course a lot of lace and flowers!!
Want to know how to make this STEP BY STEP for FREE? Wendela's tutorial will be available in our Project 52 forum before the end of Monday evening (today).
Katie T's Paper Doll
this july, one of my best friends passed away.
her name was ripley and she is and will be missed. in her honor, i
created a paper dog doll whose arms, legs, and tail move. she is
currently attached to my wall!
on her legs is a quote from all dogs go to heaven: "all dogs go to heaven because, unlike people, dogs are naturally good and loyal and kind."
supplies:
-bristol board
- acrylic paint
- patterned paper (tinkering ink)
- red fibers + transparency (basic grey)
- metal label holder (making memories)
- ribbon
-paper flower
-pins
- vintage illustrations from the graphics fairy, takeabreak @ flickr, and koreana @ flickr.
tips for recreation: think outside the box! the paper doll i made is mounted on the wall, yet is still fully movable and remains "traditional" in the doll sense. instead of using a ready-made frame, make your own. mine is constructed out of foam board which i painted with strokes of umber, yellow, and white to give it a wood-like appearance before finishing i t with a hand drawn woodgrain pattern. permanent marker works great! i freehanded both the hands and hot air balloons to give them a whimsical, folk art feel. there is no right or wrong; don't worry about being precise. it's all about expressing yourself. have fun!
Tania's Paper Doll
Tania's doll captured the romance of ballerinas, I just love the roses.
Supplies:
-Paper ( I used music paper)
-Flowers
-beaded thread
-Art Girls Charm ( my metal)
-Wood beads
Paper beads ( I made these- myself)
-wire for threading( fairly thick)
-Tissue paper
-face image ( downloaded)
- Tips to I covered a couple of Chipboard dress forms to create the body, folded the skirts and added them around the waist ( this bit was tricky!)
- then I made the paper beads,( FREE TUTORIAL!!! check the forum for how to make paper beads) and threaded them onto the thick wire and shaped them to look like arms and legs,
- attached them to the body
- then I added the metal charms
- and added the face, the flowers and beads.
My Secret Tip: a hot glue gun works wonders when you have something difficult to stick, and not enough hands to hold it. It drys so much quicker than any white glue.
