We are so happy and excited to announce our new "TOP DESIGNER"!!!! Please give JULIE MARTINEZ a HUGE round of applause!!!! This girl amazed all of us with not only her gorgeous artwork, but her uncanny ability to adapt to different art styles, which was exhibited beautifully as she walked down the halls of BAD GIRLS DESIGN ACADEMY and into each of her classes. All of her teachers were just so impressed as she handed in assignment after assignment. We asked Julie if she could give us her thoughts on the "TOP DESIGNER" contest, and this is what she had to say:
"I loved that the different rounds of the competition were set up as classes. I have a very basic grounding in design principals--pretty much whatever I can remember from designing yearbook spreads in high school--so I will be the first to admit that 99.9% of what I do, I do intuitively. It was really interesting to me to finally understand WHY certain things would work for me and certain things wouldn't.
Each class gave me an opportunity to see where my strengths were too. I love texture, color and white space, so I use these principles on my layouts often. Those classes were easier for me than design elements and unity. I had to really analyze what I was doing and why. But being challenged like that just made the lesson drive home deeper.
Now I'm really looking at my work and others with fresh eyes. When I see the gallery, I can pick out a strong design element and appreciate it as good design rather than just as something I like, but may not necessarily know why I like it.
I liken this contest to having played piano by ear for the past few years and suddenly learning how to read music. Whole new worlds are open now, and I'm loving what I see!
So, we were so impressed that we not only crowned JULIE MARTINEZ our very first TOP DESIGNER, but we also gave her a BAD GIRL DESIGNER positon!!!! Now you will not only enjoy her wonderful work from the classes, but look forward to seeing more of it every week in the BAD GIRL DESIGN GALLERY. Here is all of Julies classwork:
From Class 1: COLOR THEORY
From Class 2: TEXTURE & DIMENSION
From Class 3: DESIGN ELEMENTS
From Class 4: WHITE SPACE
From Class 5: UNITY
From Class 6: PRINCIPAL OF DESIGN
We would also like to take this time to give a HUGE CONGRATS to all of our RUNNER UPS!!! They did an amazing job at their 6 week stay at BAD GIRLS DESIGN ACADEMY!!!
Our FIRST RUNNER UP is....................
SRI SAMS!!!!! She created such a beautiful array of artwork in her classes and when asked what her favorite class was, she replied:
"I love the 2nd class on textures and dimension. I love it because it's not something
I would normally do. My pages are rather simple and flat and the class "stretches"
my creativity."
Our first runner up, Sri Sams was also given a place on the team, so now she is also a BAD GIRL DESIGNER!!!!!!!
Our SECOND RUNNER UP is.....
ANNA BOWKIS!!!! She is such a talented artist and Anna sure did make the grade with her stay at BAD GIRLS DESIGN ACADEMY. When we asked Anna what class she most enjoyed, she replied:
Texture & Dimension...Why? I love texture, you can use a single colour on a layout or in your
home, but bring the amazing array of texture into play and the whole design
changes. I love to touch and feel, I am a very tactile person, so it is only
natural that texture is my favorite element. I believe this can be seen in
my layout designs. I love to use textiles, and rough up papers to add
texture and dimension to my designs.
And our THIRD RUNNER UP is.....
RIA MOJICA!!!!! This girl is such a wonderful designer!!! We loved seeing her work week after week, as she displayed it with such excellency in our gallery. We had a chance to talk to Ria before she packed up her books to head back home and she told us:
"Each week I thought that, that week was my favorite class, because I truly never
thought of my LOs in this way before. The most challenging part of each week was
being able to do the class without sacrificing my style -- I wanted my LO to still
be "Me".
Nevertheless, my favorite class will have to be the 1st class on Color Theory. I
don't think I've done a monochromatic page -- ever. But that Princess pink LO was
so much fun to do -- I didn't realize that there is so much more to pink than just
cotton candy sweetness"
All of the RUNNERS UP will be recieving a stuffed package from BAD GIRLS and our sponsors, and we would also like to thank the TOP 10 girls also..they will also be recieving a little goody from us.
Once again, I would like to thank everyone who participated...it has been a wonderful semester and I look forward to seeing everyone next year for our second semester of "TOP DESIGNER".
Please stay tuned tomorrow when I will share the runners up class work, and until then, happy scrapping and have a great weekend!
